    Description

The Little Prince Concept Drawings by Mel Shaw Group of 4 (Hugh Harman, 1943-44). These four original color drawings were created by artist Mel Shaw in development of a live-action and animation feature film of The Little Prince by Antoine Marie Jean-Baptiste Roger, Comte de Saint-Exupéry in 1943 and 1944. They depict scenes as envisioned by the filmmakers and the black mat in which they were assembled for display at the studio during the development of the film is included. Hugh Harman left Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to form his own animation studio -- Hugh Harman Productions -- in partnership with artist Mel Shaw in 1941; they took over the closed Ub Iwerks studio in Beverly Hills and began development of an animated feature based on the King Arthur legend. In 1943 Orson Welles joined them to acquire the film rights to The Little Prince and began to develop it as a live-action and animation feature film. In his autobiography Animator on Horseback Mel Shaw relates that Welles, "would direct the live action and also play the leading role of the downed aviator in the desert." He further wrote that "working with Orson was stimulating. He was about my age with a background from the Chicago Art Institute. As I worked on the storyboards, Orson would also make little sketches. His ability for the dramatic would come to the fore when reading a passage as we explored the various characters and sections of the book. His deep voice and timing helped to visualize the possibilities of this inspiring story." However, the film was never finished. Orson Welles fell ill and moved to Florida to recover; soon thereafter Mel Shaw was drafted into the U.S. Army for military service in World War II. All that remains of the efforts of three brilliant filmmakers to craft the first film adaption of The Little Prince are a screenplay by Mr. Welles and Mr. Shaw's story art. The art is in opaque watercolor and pastel on paper and board, with image sizes of 7.25" x 5.25", 5.5" x 7", 5.75" x 8.5" and 4" x 5.5" on 6" x 7.75", 7.75" x 6", 6.5" x 9" and 4.5" x 6" sheets. A 18.5" x 17.5" black mat cut for the artwork is included. A Howard Lowery Certificate of Authenticity is included. Fine condition.
