Description

The Lion King Original Pastel Concept Art Group of 3 (Walt Disney, 1994). It took thousands upon thousands of concepts, storyboards, and animation drawings to create The Lion King - not to mention work of creating a soundtrack, voice acting, and digitally animating the film - and three of those original pieces of concept art are on display here! There is one of Simba and Nala, and two that appear to be young Simba and Nala exploring the savannah. The concept with the blue, green, and yellow palette is similar to what appears at 7:17 and the purple one is similar to when Simba and Nala approach the now dying Pride Rock at about 1:10:48. Each concept is rendered in pastel with watercolor added to one. They are roughly 6'' x 3.25'' with a quarter to a half an inch variation and showcases beautiful color palettes of green, blue, yellow, and purple. The designs and color palettes were originally going to be reminiscent of African fabrics, but this was later adjusted. As Rob Minkoff mentions in The Making of the Lion King, were made to "bring out the scale and grandeur of Africa". Rendered on 10'' x 5.5'', 9'' x 5.5'' and 8.5'' x 5.5'' paper, the concepts are a rare look at the making of the diverse and lush environments in the Academy Award-winning film that show the natural beauty of the African landscape. The lot is in Very Good condition with light edge and handling wear and faint smudging from the pastel.
From the Noted Disney Concept and Story Artist Thom Enriquez Collection.
