The Flintstones "Surfin' Fred" Layout Drawings Original Art Group of 4 by Richard Bickenbach (Hanna-Barbera, 1965). Fred's comical attempts at surfing at a beach filled with Spring Break teenagers is the highlight of this group of four original graphite layout/concept drawings by animation legend Dick Bickenbach. These were done for The Flintstones Season 4, Episode 26, which originally aired in Prime Time on 3/12/65. The first drawing shows Fred with his tousled "ho-daddy" hair style, as he learns the basics of surfing (while still on the beach); Fred's figure size is 4". Next is Fred on his board, finally out in the water, but with a huge wave about to crash down on him; Fred is 2", while the overall image size is 11.5" x 6.5". In the third drawing, Fred has managed to ride the wave, only the board is standing upright with Fred clinging to the top; "surf's up," indeed! The overall image area is 6.5" x 6.5". The last drawing is of Barney and Betty Rubble, who have just gone for a dip in the ocean; their figure sizes are 3" and 3.5". Drawings are in Very Good condition with minor handling wear.
