    Description

The Black Cauldron The Horned King Concept Art by Mel Shaw (Walt Disney, 1985). This lot should be called "The Art of Mel Shaw!" It's a stunning pastel painting of the Horned King in his castle, chasing Taran up the stairs as Eilonwy is chained to the castle wall below. The Cauldron is in clear sight on this magnificent piece of artwork. Mel Shaw (1914 - 2012) worked on Bambi and then left the studio during World War II. He returned to Disney in 1974 and worked in story and design for the next 20 years. His work can be seen in The Rescuers all the way up to The Lion King. He was a major story and designer for The Black Cauldron. Mr. Shaw was inducted as a Disney Legend in 2004. Pastel art is on black paper measuring 15" x 11", matted with an opening size of 14" x 10", and an overall mat size of 20" x 16". The artwork is signed Mel Shaw in the bottom left corner. This is one amazing piece of art! Fine condition. From the Joe Hale Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
