The Black Cauldron Horned King Concept Art (Walt Disney, 1985). This lot should be called "The Art of Mel Shaw" - it's a stunning pastel concept art painting of the Horned King, with torch in hand opening up a castle bridge of some type. Mel Shaw (1914 - 2012) worked on Bambi, and then left the studio during World War II. He returned to Disney in 1974 and worked on story and design in Feature Animation for the next 20 years. His work can be seen in The Rescuers all the way up to The Lion King. He was a major story and designer for The Black Cauldron. His pastel originals are highly sought after. Mr. Shaw was inducted as a Disney Legend in 2004. This is an amazing pastel piece on paper measuring 10" x 7.5". The artwork is signed in the bottom left corner. Matted with an opening of 9.5" x 7.5", and an overall mat size of 14" x 11". A masterpiece of a painting. Minor handling wear. In Very Good condition.
