The Black Cauldron Concept Art and Development Notes (Walt Disney, 1985). "The mask was a human skull. From it great antlers rose in cruel curves. The Horned King's eyes blazed behind the gaping sockets whitened bone." This is the story development note that sits under this staggering Mel Shaw original pastel story development/concept art of the Horned King. Mr. Shaw is a Disney Legend, inducted in 2004. He began with Disney with Bambi, then left for World War II. He returned to Disney and worked from 1974-1994, with The Lion King being his last film. He was a story man, writer, and design artist. His artwork is magnificent. This pastel is matted with a mat opening of 14" x 10". Mr. Shaw was involved heavily in story in this film. The pastel concept artwork is signed by Mel Shaw (1914 - 2012) in the corner. Mel Shaw originals are rare. Fine. From the Joe Hale Archives.
