Description

Tarzan Character Concept Cel Setup with Pre-Production Test Background (Walt Disney, 1999). "I wanna know, can you show me?" Lingering in the shadows of the canopy, Tarzan waits warily in this rare, absolutely magnificent setup featuring cel painted character concept art over a pre-production test background for his eponymous Disney Renaissance film, Tarzan. Widely considered to be the last film of their Renaissance era, Disney's Tarzan was also the first feature length adaptation of Burroughs' iconic 1912 tale to be animated. Production artwork for this film is exceedingly scarce as even the hand-drawn animation sequences were painted digitally; any hand-painted cels would have been created as presentation cels and employee-exclusive limited editions or extraordinarily unique developmental pieces of concept art such as this. This unusual and rare setup features a stylized, full-figured 5.5" x 8" image of Tarzan hand-painted with a matt finish on the top side of the pegholeless acetate cel. The pre-production background has been masterfully hand-painted in monochrome blue gouache on Bristol board to an image area of 16.25" x 10.5" with a 0.75" wide black tape border spanning the top and bottom edges. The setup has an overall size of 16.25" x 12". With typical studio handling and edge wear including remaining tape/adhesive residue near the edges and minor areas of surface scuffing, overall this incredible concept setup is in Very Good condition.
