Space Ace Ace and Commander Borf Concept Art Group of 2 (Don Bluth, 1983). "Ace is being attacked by the evil Commander Borf!" The narrator of the 1983 arcade phenomenon Space Ace fills us in on the premise of the traditionally animated video game classic. "Earthlings surrender to me!" Borf commands. This is an unbelievably rare find: conceptual character drawings created for Space Ace featuring our hero Ace and primary antagonist Commander Borf. To keep production costs down, the Bluth Group studio chose to use its staff to provide voices for the characters rather than hire actors (with the exception of Michael Rye as the narrator.) Don Bluth himself provided the voice of the sinister Commander Borf with the help of digital modulation. He would later say that if the studio had the budget, he would have considered Paul Shenar for the role. These stunning and dynamic drawings are rendered in ink and artist marker on 8.5" x 11" sheets of bond paper. Ace's drawings measure an overall 5.25" x 6.5", and Borf is 6.25" x 6.75". The paper shows mild handling and edge wear with pinholes in the corners. There are light pencil notations near the lower left corners, and the condition overall is Very Good.
