Description

Sleeping Beauty Princess Aurora Pastel Concept Drawing Original Art by Kay Nielsen (Walt Disney, 1959). Kay Nielsen (1886 - 1957) created this exceptional concept piece for Sleeping Beauty. Kay was an in-demand illustrator of children's fantasy and fairy tale books while still in his home country, Denmark. When Kay and his wife relocated to Los Angeles, Joe Grant recommended him to Disney, and he was hired as a concept artist in 1937. Kay's detail-filled drawings were time-consuming, and when Disney's overseas market shrunk with the onset of World War II, the studio let a number of employees go in a cost-cutting measure. Kay was one of the first to go. In 1952, John Hench remembered Kay's wonderful concept drawings, and convinced Walt to rehire him to work on concepts for Sleeping Beauty, like this gorgeous pastel drawing of Briar Rose outfitted as her true identity, Princess Aurora. The Princess is standing in the woods as birds hold up her delicate veil, and her basket for berry-picking is on the ground beside her. The detail is wonderful! The art is matted with an opening of 7.75" x 5.75", and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 18.5" x 16.5". All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition. The art is in Fine condition with light handling.
