Description
Sanrio Puroland - "Discovery Theatre" Pair of Original 20" x 15" Concept Art Pieces by Syd Mead (LEG, c. 1987/1990s). This rare pair of original concept art illustrations by Syd Mead was created for Sanrio Puroland's animatronic attraction, the Discovery Theatre. Rendered in gouache on 20" x 15" Bainbridge board, each piece vividly depicts Mead's futuristic vision for the interior of the attraction. Both illustrations are signed by Syd Mead (1933-2019), the legendary industrial designer and concept artist celebrated for his visionary work on Blade Runner, TRON, and Aliens. Known as "the artist who illustrates the future," Mead brought his distinctive neo-futurist style to Sanrio's bold attempt to rival Disney with its indoor theme park dedicated to Hello Kitty and friends. Sanrio Puroland, which opened in Tokyo in 1990, features attractions, live shows, shops, and restaurants centered on Sanrio characters. Landmark Entertainment Group, co-founded by Gary Goddard and Tony Christopher, was commissioned to design many of the park's facilities. These original Syd Mead illustrations represent a unique intersection of Japanese pop culture and American entertainment design, blending Sanrio's whimsical world with Mead's futuristic sensibility.
