Robert McGinnis - Splash Study Sketches for Preliminary Poster (Touchstone Films, 1984). The distinctive style of the famed artist Robert McGinnis is featured front and center of this spectacular lot that showcases 14 stunning study sketches created as studies for a preliminary poster of the 1984 Ron Howard romantic comedy film Splash, famous for being the first production released by Walt Disney Production under the film label Touchstone Pictures. A lifelong Illustrator, McGinnis started his career in the art world as an apprentice at Walt Disney Studios and later enrolled at Ohio State University to study fine art. Later on, McGinnis would be introduced to an art director at Dell Publishing, where his fame as a book cover illustrator would skyrocket. His incredible art has adorned the cover of more than 1,200 paperback novels and the famous movie posters for over 40 films like Breakfast At Tiffany's, Barbarella, and multiple James Bond movies, among many more. Exquisitely rendered in graphite, the fourteen pieces included in this lot were created on 14" x 17" paper, displaying amazing illustrations of the film's protagonists, a young man reunited with the mermaid who rescued him early in his life, later played in the movie by Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah. It's easy to imagine how each of these pieces could have turned into the final poster for the film! The lot comes with a Disney Creative Resources folder. Overall, the drawings present light handling and edge wear, with some showing minor stains and some showing pinholes along the edges. The general condition is Very Good.
