DescriptionRed Hot Riding Hood Concept Drawings by Preston Blair Group of 4 (MGM, 1943). The character of Red Hot and her sensuous song and dance numbers that so aroused poor Woolfie are the stuff of Animation Legend. She was designed and animated by Preston Blair (1908 - 1995), and first seen in this Tex Avery-directed cartoon short, which was released to theaters on 5/8/43. Red was no doubt a welcome distraction from home front World War II worries, and reportedly a big favorite with servicemen. Here is a set of original 12 field 3-peghole early concept drawings of Red Hot from the hand of Mr. Blair. In the first, we see Red as she demurely sits at Wolf's table, resisting his advances. This is a beautiful sketch, done in graphite and red pencil, with an overall image size of 3" x 3.25". Next is a full-figure field of view graphite drawing of Red with arms wide open; figure size is 4" with two framing boxes, for an overall image size of 6.5" x 5". This drawing has the number 56 written in the lower right corner. Next is a sketch of Red with one hand on her hip, the other behind her neck in a very sexy pose that measures 5" tall. There are two more sketches of Red rendered outside the field of view box. Overall image size is approximately 7" x 7.75". The final drawing is a full-figure sketch of a similar pose, with one arm up and the other by her hip; figure size is 6.5". A field of view box is drawn around her, and there are a few other doodles (including a faint, partially erased version) around this 6" x 4.5" box. These last two 12 field drawings have the main image partially traced on the backside as well. This is a fascinating look at one of animation's most desirable characters as she comes to life, from a true master of the art form, Preston Blair. Overall condition is Very Good, with minor handling wear.
