Ray Patterson "Grilly" Concept Original Art Group of 6 (c. 1940s-50s). Ray Patterson (1911 - 2001) had a long and distinguished career in animation, going back to his days with Charles Mintz's Krazy Kat/Screen Gems studio in 1929. Here is a rare group of six pages of concept artwork, possibly done for MGM, where Patterson worked in Bill Hanna and Joe Barbara's unit from 1941 until 1954. These are drawn in red pencil on 12 field 3-peghole paper. The first two sheets seem to be laid out as a comic book 2-page spread, about a young monkey with a stub tail, named Grilly. Both pages appear to be for the same project, in two different versions of the same 2-page spread. The third and fourth sheets continue the story, in a "Sunday Comics Section" half-page format. Here, the monkey has been renamed "Sugie." The fifth sheet has a number of sketches of Grilly/Sugie, plus a hunter and an African native boy. The sixth sheet includes sketches of a seal named "Bo-Bo," possibly for an MGM short. A very interesting look at the early steps in the animation process. The sheets are in Good to Very Good condition, some with fold lines.
