Description

Pinocchio Rare Early Story Concept Art by Lee Blair (Walt Disney, 1940). Offered in this lot is a rare treasure for Pinocchio, concept art, and Lee Blair collectors: an exceptional early story concept art by Lee Blair (1911 - 1993) created for a deleted scene in Disney's classic feature film Pinocchio. With so much experimentation, exploration, and adjustments made to the film before production, it's no wonder that there are a variety of deleted scenes that never made it to the big screen. One of these was a dark, suspenseful scene where poor Pinocchio is attacked by a gigantic octopus. Lee Blair was one of the artists who created concepts for the scene, showcasing his mastery of lighting and tone. The brother of Preston Blair and husband of Mary Blair, Lee Blair became president of the California Watercolor Society in 1935, and shortly thereafter created concepts for Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Saludos Amigos. This watercolor concept showcases similar underwater effects from one of his concepts of the octopus, but this work puts a lighter spin on the situation as Pinocchio (notably wearing green pants) floats off on the back of a gentle turtle. We'll never know for sure if it was a rescue, but we can imagine how the scene might have played out thanks to Blair's vision. The lot has an approximate image size of 8'' x 6'' and is displayed in a 12.5'' x 10.5'' mat. Very Good condition with light handling wear and faint age-related toning.
