Pinocchio Early Concept Art by Lee Blair (Walt Disney, 1940). Here is an extraordinary early Pinocchio concept art piece attributed to the hand of Lee Blair (1911 - 1993). Mr. Blair was a Disney artist and husband to Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) and younger brother to Disney artist, Preston Blair. Concept art usually refers to "world-building" or "character development" artwork used to inspire the creativity for the project. This early concept art piece shows Pinocchio with green shorts rather than the red shorts that he would wear in the film. Concept art is developed through several iterations. This piece is a great example of how multiple solutions are explored before settling on the final design, such as the color of his shorts (and the color of his hat). You can see this scene begin around the 1:10:20 time mark. We love the clam in this scene, he makes his appearance around the 1:11:47 time mark with Jiminy Cricket. The art was rendered in gouache on board, and housed in a glass-fronted frame of 12.5" x 10.5". The frame has an aperture of 8" x 6". Frame sold as-is. A fantastic one-of-a-kind Lee Blair piece! Condition is Fine.
