Peter Pan Peter and Wendy on the Jolly Roger Concept Painting by David Hall Original Art (Walt Disney, 1940). This magnificent piece of Peter Pan concept art, featuring Peter Pan and Wendy at the helm of Captain Hook's ship, the Jolly Roger, is a real show-stopper. During the Walt Disney Studio's early development of Peter Pan as an animated feature, a number of incredible concept paintings were created by Irish-born artist David Hall (1905 - 1964). His output on this film, while not widely known, is legendary with Disney scholars like Didier Ghez. In his 2016 book They Drew as They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Musical Years (The 1940s - Part One), he writes of this piece: "This recently discovered painting is without a doubt one of David Hall's masterpieces." Mr. Ghez not only reproduced this painting on page 201 of this book, he also used it as the cover image. And it's certainly cover-worthy -- Peter triumphantly at the helm, with his feathered pirate captain's hat and wearing a musket at his side; Wendy right behind Peter, hanging on the the ship's ropes; Nana the dog scrubbing the deck with a brush in her mouth, while little Michael blows a horn. Wonderful color and detail abound in this museum-worthy painting. The art is in ink and watercolor on illustration board measuring approximately 15.5" x 11.75", with an image size of 13.25" x 10". David Hall has signed the piece in the lower right corner. The board shows handling and edge wear, with some staining in the upper left corner and bottom border. Good condition. From the Joe Rinaldi Estate.
