Mr. Bug Goes to Town "Cabaret" Scene Layout Drawings Original Art Group of 3 (Max Fleischer, 1941). One of the funniest scenes in this greatly underrated animated film is when bad guys Smack the Mosquito and Swat the Fly, working on orders from C. Bagwell Beetle, hide out inside a lighting mechanism inside the cabaret where Hoppity and Honey Bee are enjoying an evening out. Their plan is to hit Hoppity over the head with a large, heavy nail. Those plans go awry when Smack hits an exposed wire in the mechanism, giving him quite a shock! Here are three original layout/concept drawings from that scene. The first shows Honey Bee and Hoppity at their table, as Hoppity slowly moves his hand to hers. It's in graphite on 16 field animation paper. Next is a more detailed graphite drawing on 16 field paper, showing Honey Bee and Hoppity dancing by as Smack's nail hits the wires. Finally, there's a small drawing on paper measuring 11" x 8.5" with Smack caught by the wire, as Swat whistles for help. It's in graphite with red and blue pencil highlights. Overall condition is Good, with handling and edge wear, fold creases, and mild paper tanning.
