Melody Time Johnny Appleseed Concept Painting by Mary Blair (Walt Disney, 1948). "There's a lot of work to do!" says John Chapman, also known as Johnny Appleseed. "The Legend of Johnny Appleseed" was a segment in this tenth Disney Studio feature film, and Johnny went across the country planting apple trees. Mary Blair (1911-1978) did color and styling for this film, along with Claude Coats and Dick Kelsey. This is an outstanding Blair original concept painting of Johnny Appleseed walking in the woods, with a pot on his head. It's nightfall when the angel narrates, "Man can't take no rest. He aims to plant the whole darn wildness." Mary's work in this film echoes the painting styles of Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood. Disney Legend Frank Thomas noted Blair's "Appleseed" artwork as "Some of the greatest things I've ever seen for an animated feature. Just handsome, handsome drawings. The colors, the shapes, the way they all went together!" This concept art Color Key painting is in gouache on illustration board measuring 9" x 7". Black, gray, and purple all combine in this beautiful study. Tack holes in the corners, with minor handling wear. Very Good condition.
