Mary Blair The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1949). "Once you cross that bridge my friends, his powers ends!" says the narrator, Bing Crosby, as Ichabod is almost there! But alas as we see, "The next morning Ichabod's hat was found. Close beside it, a shattered pumpkin. But there was no trace of the schoolmaster." Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) did the color and styling on this film along with John Hench, Don DaGradi, and Claud Coats. John Canemaker wrote of her work in this film, "Blair's color and styling wonderfully contrast Sleepy Hollow's bright autumnal colors and midnight's spookiness" in The Art and Flair of Mary Blair: An Appreciation, on page 23. This is one of Mary Blair's most significant concept art pieces for this film. We see Ichabod backwards, now seeing the Headless Horseman with not only his sword, but the pumpkin! The darkness of midnight is conveyed by the dark color hues in their reflection on the bridge. We see the Halloween full moon in both the sky and the reflection in the water in this painting. This is the key scene, where Ichabod never makes it through the covered bridge. Gouache on board of 10.5" x 10". Pinholes in corners, minor handling and edge wear. Overall Very Good.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
