DescriptionMary Blair Song of the South Johnny Appleseed Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1946). "Zip-a dee-doo-dah, Zip-a dee-ay! My oh my what a wonderful day. Plenty of sunshine headin' my way... Zip-a dee-doo-dah... zip-a dee-ay!." If there ever was an original Mary Blair painting that showcased the lyrics to this Academy award-winning song, this is it. The covered bridge, tiny Uncle Remus coming up the road from far away, the landscaping, the river, the Georgia terrain, are all here. John Canemaker writes in his book The Art and Flair of Mary Blair :An Appreciation, "In the fall of 1944, Blair spent a week in Atlanta and nearby rural Georgia locations doing preliminary research for Song of the South. Her plein-air paintings of Georgia cotton and cornfields, dusty red roads, wood shacks, plantation mansions, and burning sunsets were adapted – in high-key hues – into Song of the South's special effects sequences." One of the most detailed studies from her hand we have seen, this piece is rendered in gouache on illustration board. In a mat of 12" x 10" with a mat opening of 10" x 7". Pinholes in corners under mat with minor handling and edge wear overall. Very Good condition.
