    Description

Mary Blair Song of the South Farm Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1946). "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay, wonderful feeling, wonderful day!" Disney Legend Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) paints Uncle Remus in a beautiful Georgia landscape that evokes a feeling of warmth and charm that simply could not be achieved by the hand of another artist. Using a wet application of watercolor for the sky, the environment takes on a soft, ethereal feel in contrast to her usual bold, flat blocks of color. In the process of creating concept art for 1946's The Song of the South, Mary Blair took a month-long research trip to Atlanta, Georgia where she met with the well-known artist and historian Wilbur G. Kurtz. As seen on page 63 of They Drew as They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Mid-Century Era, she told a journalist of the Atlanta Constitution, "I want to know what a Georgia cotton field looks like and all about the briar patch... I want to find out about the weather and the terrain and to get the feel of Georgia for myself." Mary Blair's enthusiasm and interest in the subject shines in this spectacular piece. Rendered in gouache and watercolor on 10.25" x 9" illustration board, this lovely painting shows minor handling and edge wear with pinholes in the corners. The condition is Very Good.
