Mary Blair So Dear to My Heart "Christmas Eve" Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1949). This live-action/animated feature film had a story by Marc Davis, Ken Anderson, and Bill Peet. Art direction on this film was done by John Hench, Dick Kelsey, and Mary Blair. This is a very rare original "Atmosphere Sketch" done by Mary Blair for this film, depicting early evening. A full dark evening painting of this exact scene can be seen in the John Canemaker book The Art and Flair of Mary Blair: An Appreciation on page 34. "She would show all the seasons of the year with this image, but the Church always remained the same," Canemaker writes. He goes on to say, "Her art is even more remarkably gorgeous for So Dear to My Heart. A nostalgic, valentine to turn of the century rural America, the film was especially dear to Walt Disney." This is a rare gouache painting on paper measuring 10" x 12", mounted to 12.5" x 15.5" board. The sketch/painting is titled in bottom left "Christmas Eve," with Prod 20151 written in bottom right corner and #12 in top left corner. The church with changing seasons and Christmas Eve is seen in the opening scene of this movie. The original painting is hand-signed Mary Blair (1911 - 1978). Typed sticker on mat reads "Atmosphere Sketch by Mary Blair from 'So Dear to My Heart.'" This comes from a longtime family friend of Mary Blair. Minor handling wear, pinholes in corners and edge wear. In Very Good condition.
