    Description

Mary Blair Peter Pan Skull Rock Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1953). "Now, me dear Princess, this is me proposition. You tell me the hiding place of Peter Pan, and I shall set you free." Captain Hook and Smee row Tiger Lily to the ominous Skull Rock in this wonderful original concept painting by the fabulous Mary Blair (1911 - 1978). Showing a remarkable level of elegance in her swift brush strokes and limited color palette, Mary Blair achieves bold minimalism and dramatic lighting to eerie effect in this exceptional piece created for the 1953 Disney animated adventure Peter Pan. In the Taschen-published The Walt Disney Film Archives: 1921-1968, historian and film-maker Mindy Johnson writes, "with Blair's vision, each unique corner of Never Land featured a palette unlike any other sequence in the overall film. Through the strong inspiration of Blair's conceptual work, Disney made a concerted effort to create a Never Land as rich, vivid and colorful as the inhabitants of the far-off place." A similar Mary Blair painting of Skull Rock can be seen in this book on page 452. Rendered in gouache on 7" x 5.25" illustration board, this fantastic piece shows minor handling and edge wear with pinholes in the corners. The condition is Very Good.
