Mary Blair - It's a Small World Mermaids 12.5'' x 14'' Concept Painting (Walt Disney, c. 1960's). The legendary Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) got her start at Disney as a color stylist and became one of Walt Disney's favorite artists. She was eventually tasked with creating the look for Disney's It's a Small World attraction that debuted at the New York World's Fair in 1964. It was an instant success and was made into a permanent installation at Disneyland after the fair and has become one of the most iconic rides in Disney theme park history. Offered here is one of Mary's concept pieces created for the early development of the original World's Fair attraction. The image features a group of three brightly colored and highly stylized mermaids atop an equally imaginative alligator figure. The brilliant mix of colors incorporated in this mid-century masterpiece is a perfect example of what has been termed "The Art and Flair of Mary Blair". The 12.5" x 14" image is painted in gouache on 14" x 17" illustration board. This one-of-a-kind original by Disney Legend inductee Mary Blair was later published as part of a series of postcards released for the 2009 Colors of Mary Blair exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. The art shows minor handling and pinholes at the edges and condition is Very Good.
