DescriptionMary Blair "It's a Small World" Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1964/66). "It's a Small World after all...:" When one walks in to the lobby of the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, the walls are covered in reproductions of Small World concept art by Mary Blair (1911 - 1978). Rolly Crump once said, "We were doing Audio-Animatronics figures for the 1964 World's Fair pavilion, and Walt came in and said I've got an idea about this little boat ride about children around the world. We looked at him like he was nuts". Marty Skylar added, "Walt remembered artwork of children made for Saludos Amigos. He said, "We have to get Mary Blair to do it!" "I think it hit her at the right time". "It was a powerful package for her. It was about children, the freedom of color, and that Walt asked her do it.". On page 90 of John Canemaker's book, The Art and Flair of Mary Blair: An Appreciation, he writes "Blair's synthesis of world architecture in a single setting creates a sparkling subtlety promoting unity and harmony among different cultures". This original painting by Mary Blair showcases that sentiment perfectly. The 20" x 9" gouache on board painting features subtle references to iconic structures such as the Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Pyramids, Dutch Windmills and others all as seen through the artistic lens of this beloved Disney artist. The one-of-a-kind piece is in a frame of 31" x 19". The art has pinholes in the corners; otherwise, condition is Very Good. Frame is sold as-is.
