Mary Blair Fiesta of the Flowers Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, c. 1943-45). Mary Blair (1911-1978) went on Walt Disney's South American Goodwill tour in 1941 in a life-changing trip that would shape her artwork into the bright, bold colors for which she is widely known. On page 117 The Disney That Never Was Charles Solomon writes, "when he returned, Disney initially planned to make 12 short cartoons with Latin American themes, but during the summer of 1942, he decided to package the shorts in groups of four and release them as features." The two resulting movies were Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros. Presented is an original concept painting by artist Mary Blair created in the development of one of the unmade shorts originally proposed titled Fiesta of the Flowers. Unbelievably rare art for a film never made, this bright and beautiful painting is rendered in gouache on illustration paper, and it is one of the finest pieces of concept art to emerge from this proposed film. The image area measures 7.25" x 5.5", and the paper is 9" x 7.5". The piece bears the production number 2053 on the back. Minor handling and edge wear with black tape framing the edges. Pinholes in corners, and Very Good condition.
