DescriptionMary Blair Dumbo Crows Early Concept Painting Original Art (Walt Disney, 1941). "Man, when I see an elephant fly!" In Didier Ghez's book They Drew as They Pleased – The Hidden Art of Disney's Mid-Century Era (The 1950s – 1960s), he writes, "Mary joined the Disney Studios on April, 1940 and was immediately asked to create story sketches for two of Joe Grant's brainchildren: Dumbo and Lady (which years later became Lady and the Tramp)." Here is one of the earliest works we have come across from Mary Blair's beginning days at the Walt Disney Studios. This is a rare story sketch, a detailed painting of a countryside with the birds all on a high-tension wire, created in gouache on 5-peghole storyboard board. The board measures 8" x 9" with the painted area taking up 7.5" x 6". This early Dumbo story painting would eventually have something similar make it to the screen; it can be considered a very early concept illustration for what would become the "CROWS." This is a painting done prior to Mary's career-changing trip to South America, and one of the very few we have come across from Mary Blair's work on Dumbo! Pinholes in corners and minor handling. Very Good condition. From the Joe Rinaldi Estate.
