Description

Mary Blair Cinderella Fairy Godmother and Cinderella Color Key/Concept Painting Original Art (Walt Disney, 1950). "There's nothing left to believe in," cried Cinderella after her cruel stepmother and stepsisters ripped up her new ball gown, ruining her chance to meet the prince. Suddenly, Cinderella found herself being comforted by an old hooded woman who appears out of nowhere. "Nothing, my dear?" the old woman asks. Mary Blair has crafted this haunting concept painting of Cinderella's first encounter with her Fairy Godmother, who is seen here with magic sparkling stars around her, under a full moon. Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) was going full-steam by this point in her career at the Disney Studios. Her brilliant use of color was refined by her inclusion alongside her husband Lee Blair in the World War II goodwill tour's "El Grupo" organized by Walt Disney in 1941, and she had previously contributed heavily to such films as The Three Caballeros, Song of the South, Melody Time (the segments "Once Upon a Wintertime" and "The Legend of Johnny Appleseed"), So Dear to My Heart, and The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" segment). Oddly enough, Mary was at first reluctant to join Lee at the Disney Studios, and her first short stint only lasted about a year before she returned, spending the next ten years creating little masterpieces like this Cinderella color key/concept painting. It's no wonder Walt Disney considered Mary one of his favorite artists, even bringing her back into the studio to work on the "It's a Small World" attraction for the 1964 World's Fair.
Mary Blair was posthumously honored as a Disney Legend, and awarded the prestigious Winsor McCay Award in 1996. Her work is widely sought-after by advanced Disney collectors, and she's been the subject of a number of books, including two by animation historian John Canemaker. Her influence on artists continues to this day.
This museum-quality painting is in gouache with fixative on board, with an image size of approximately 7" x 6.5", and is secured in a mat measuring 12.25" x 11.5". Condition is Very Good to Fine with light handling wear.
