Mary Blair (attributed) "Baby Ballet - Fantasia Sequel" Dancer Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1941). Mary Blair began at Disney as a $60-a-week sketch artist. One of her early assignments before taking the South America trip with Walt Disney was to do concept art for "Baby Ballet." This was a planned segment for the aborted "Fantasia Sequel." John Canemaker writes in The Art and Flair of Mary Blair, "Blair experimented with styles and techniques but eventually took art direction from supervisors Joe Grant and Sylvia Holland." This is a rare very early work we believe to be by Miss Blair, created during her beginnings at the Walt Disney Studio; an original gouache on brown 12 field 5-peghole paper of one of the dancers from the proposed "Baby Ballet." It appears the baby's tutu has fallen down, in this adorable 5" image. Minor handling and edge wear with pinholes in corners. Very Good condition.
