Mary Blair Alice in Wonderland Caterpillar Concept Painting (Walt Disney, 1951). "A E I O U..." sings the Caterpillar sitting on his mushroom top with his Hookah Pipe. He then says, "WHO... R... U?!" after his vowel song is interrupted by Alice. This is an outstanding Mary Blair original concept/Color Key painting of this film's first appearance of the Caterpillar. Alice walks up, sees and hears the Caterpillar singing, and approaches him. A similar painting is on page 102 of the book Magic, Color Flair - The World of Mary Blair by John Canemaker. It is interesting to see this other painting, with black hookah hose and trim as opposed to this one of yellow. You can see when comparing the two, how Mary would experiment with color on each key scene. Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) was Art Director and Color Stylist on this film, along with John Hench, Ken Anderson, Claude Coats, and Don DaGradi. This gouache on paperboard painting by Mary is matted with an opening of 13" x 9.5" and framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 20" x 26.5". The foliage around the Caterpillar is stunning. Frame is sold as-is, artwork has minor handling and is in overall Very Good condition. From the Howard Lowery Collection
