    Description

Mary Blair Alice in Wonderland Caterpillar Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1951). "A, E, I, O, U... O, U, E, I, O, A... U, E, I, A... A, E, I, O, U." The arrogant but zen hookah-smoking caterpillar of Alice in Wonderland is featured here in this whimsical original concept painting by Mary Blair (1911-1978). Utilizing playful, curvilinear linework, Blair exclusively uses organic shapes in this image, making the scene feel less grounded and more ethereal, in line with the surreal nature of the classic story. An excellent showcase of Blair's proficiency, you can nearly count the brushstrokes in this painting! A beautiful early design, the caterpillar shares many similarities with the final product, from his color to the memorable, lumpy, top-heavy hairdo seen in the film. He notably, however, only seems to have four limbs as opposed to 12. Rendered in gouache on 10.5" x 8.75" illustration board, the piece shows minor handling and edge wear with pinholes in the corners. The condition is Very Good.
