Description

Lady and the Tramp Preliminary Character Design Drawing Pair and Preliminary Layout Drawing Group of 7 by Ken O' Connor (Walt Disney, 1955). By the hand of Disney Legend Ken O'Connor (1908 - 1998), here is a spectacular group of seven preliminary layout drawings and two preliminary character design drawings created for Disney's Lady and the Tramp. O'Connor joined the studio in 1935 and continued working as a layout artist and art director there until his retirement in 1978, though he would still consult on Back to Neverland and EPCOT attractions as well as teach at CalArts. These layouts would help him and other artists on the project understand the look of Lady's home and the world that she lived in. Three detail the interior of Lady's home and her movement in it during her chase with Si and Am, another explores the details of one of the items on display, and others explore the look of Lady's doghouse, Darling's rocking chair, and the fence in Lady's yard. The film was also set at the turn of the century and the artists had to ensure that the characters looked like they fit the time period. Two of the pages look at how women of the era might dress in preparation for designing Aunt Sarah. The artwork was created with graphite and charcoal and is rendered on a mix of 12 field and 16 field pages aside from one of the character design drawings which is rendered on 6.5'' x 8'' paper. Ranging in size from around 4.5'' x 4'' to 15.5'' x 11.5'', the drawings are in Good condition with some smudging, faint toning, and light edge and handling wear.
