Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow Ink Test Cels with Custom Painted Background (Walt Disney, c. 1930s).
Impressive and very rare hand-inked, hand-painted Inker's Test cels featuring Horace Horsecollar (from a scene in the 1934 short Camping Out) and Clarabelle Cow (from the 1935 short On Ice). In the mid-1930s, with the studio gearing up for production on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, more artists were needed than ever, and the call was put out for women with artistic talent. Training classes were held, where the women learned to ink with crow quill pens; those who learned the techniques were hired as inkers (the more talented students) or painters. This pair of cels appear to have passed the test, as they are smoothly inked with a steady hand, probably from the same artist; these images appear together on page 100 of Mindy Johnson's excellent book Ink & Paint: The Women of Walt Disney's Animation (Disney Editions, 2017). Figure sizes are approximately 4.5" and 3.5". The Clarabelle cel is noted as 34 in the lower right, signed Decker. The pastoral background was more recently painted for the cels; it's painted with gouache on illustration board measuring 15" x 10". Condition is Very Good with mild handling wear.
