Hank Porter WWII Disney Gremlin Insignia Air Transport Command (Walt Disney, c. 1940s). During WWII, Ronald Dahl (future author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach) was a British flight lieutenant, assigned to the British Embassy in Washington, DC. At this time, he wrote about Gremlins -- beings that can be seen by only pilots, navigators, and gunners aboard aircraft in flight. Walt Disney was so intrigued that he began working on a fully animated project for these little characters. The project never came to fruition, but it did yield a series of Disney comic book stories by Walt Kelly. Dahl also published a Gremlins children's book in 1943, with art by Bill Justice. These important WWII characters went on to be used 28 times for Disney military insignia. This is a great design by Hank Porter, Disney's Publicity Art chief, who ran the Insignia Art division in wartime. This preliminary pencil drawing evolved into a symbol of Air Transport Command. The image was used for the Presqule Isle, ME, branch that was North Atlantic HQ. (Air Transport Command was the strategic airlift component of the Army Air Force. It delivered supplies and equipment overseas.) The art is rendered in graphite with blue highlights on trimmed vellum. Great image of 4" on 6" on trimmed, circular paper -- a cute image, considering the rugged subject matter. The art appears on Page 197 of a 2015 book of Disney Insignia, Characters of Military.
