Hank Porter - WWII 716th Bombardment Squadron "Gremlin" Insignia Design (Walt Disney, 1940s). In WWII, when Roald Dahl (author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach) was a British Flight Lieutenant, assigned to the British Embassy in Washington DC, he wrote about "Gremlins." According to the story, Gremlins can only be seen by pilots, navigators, and gunners onboard an in-flight plane. Walt Disney was so intrigued by this story that he began working on a fully animated project for these little characters. The project never came to fruition, but did see a series of Disney comic book stories by Walt Kelly. Dahl did release a Gremlins children's book in 1943 with art by Bill Justice. These important World War II characters also went on to be used 28 times for war-time insignias. This is a great design from the hand of Hank Porter, with a Gremlin contemplating a frosty schooner of beer. This insignia was done for the 716th Bombardment Squadron, established as a B-24 Liberator heavy bomber replacement training unit. The unit was converted in 1941 for operational training, and was assigned to the Second Air Force, for training. They were deployed to the Mediterranean Theater of Operations in December of 1943. The insignia was done in graphite with great blue, yellow, and orange pencil highlights, on trimmed vellum-type paper with an approximate diameter of 7". The reclining Gremlin is 3" long. In Fine condition.
