Description
Garth Williams My Big Counting Book Preliminary Wraparound Cover Design (as "Baby's Animal Counting Book") Original Concept Art plus Published Book (Golden Press, 1956). Garth Williams (1912 - 1996) was the original illustrator of classic children's books like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little as well as the classic series Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder that inspired the Little House on the Prairie television series starring Michael Landon. Here is his original early concept painting for a children's counting book with the title Baby's Animal Counting Book, painted in gouache/watercolor on 17.25" x 11.5" paper; the image area measures approximately 13.75" x 8". The book was eventually published as My Big Counting Book and we have a copy to include with the painting; the 9.5" x 12.5" book was fully illustrated by Mr. Williams. While the finished cover art is attractive, we think the concept is quite charming, especially the ten see-sawing dogs on the back cover! The art, which was no doubt not meant to be saved for posterity, is in Good condition with handling and edge wear, tack holes, a vertical fold crease down the middle, and mild age-related paper toning.Auction Info
