Description

Garth Williams Baby Farm Animals Preliminary Cover Design Drawings plus Published Book Group of 11 (Simon & Schuster, 1953/Golden Press, 1974). Garth Williams (1912 - 1996) was born in an artistic family - his father Hamilton was a cartoonist for Punch while his mother Florence was a landscape painter. Although he studied to be an architect, Garth accepted a commission for a book illustration in 1945; the book was Stuart Little by E.B. White. Here are ten preliminary cover design drawings for a children's book on farm animals that was published by Simon & Schuster's Golden Press division which was published in 1953, and underwent many subsequent editions. The drawings are in graphite with eight on 8.5" x 11" paper with approximate image sizes of 6.75" x 8", and two on onionskin paper measuring 11" x 14" with image sizes of 10" x 11.75"; these last two include the donkey and surrounding animals shown on the final published book (an eighth-printing copy of which is included). The art is in overall Good to Very Good condition with some mostly minor handling and edge wear.
