Description

Fractured Flickers Main Title Card Original Art by Sam Clayberger (Jay Ward, c. 1961). Jay Ward's irreverent use of old silent movie clips with funny added dialog lasted only a year, but the series is still being shown (most Sundays on the Movies! Channel), over 60 years later! The pilot episode was shot and copyrighted in 1961, though the series wouldn't air until January 1, 1963. Here is a very rare hand-drawn title with a painted "broken" strip of film that does not match what we've seen in episodes of the show; it may have been an early discarded attempt, or featured in the original pilot, or it possibly had some other use. The actual animated opening was much more detailed, with cartoon characters modeled after silent film stars as the title appears, one letter at a time. This original "main title" card (not on cel, although there is a protective 12 field cel overlay) is pictured in Darrell Van Citters' extensive book The Art of Jay Ward Productions on page 198. The image measures approximately 9" x 9.75"; the gray background is a UPA cover sheet with a logo on the backside. The pasted-on film strip fragments with carefully cut-out sprocket holes are taped to the backing sheet along the top and bottom edges, and the inside edges are loose. The art is in Very Good condition with minor handling wear.
