Description
Fantasia "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" Yen Sid's Room Concept/Background Study Drawing by Joe Stahley (Walt Disney, 1940). Step into the mysterious room of the powerful wizard Yen Sid with this magical concept/background study drawing from the emblematic segment "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" of Disney's animated masterpiece Fantasia. The original idea for this iconic part of the film originated in 1937 when the studio acquired rights to Paul Dukas's musical adaptation of the poem "The Apprentice Magician" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Initially, the short would have been a Silly Symphony cartoon until it made its way into the 1940 anthology film, becoming one of Mickey Mouse's most important roles. A wonderful invitation to the mystic quarters of the mighty sorcerer, this fascinating drawing rendered in graphite draws our attention immediately to the center of the image, where a candle illuminates the magic book in the center of the room and reveals stunning details in the piece, such as the globe near the corner, the shadow of the alchemical retorn in the foreground, and even an early version of the water container used by Mickey in the final short. This early rendition of the room measures an image size of 5.75" x 4.5" on the 9.5" x 12" studio paper, showing the note "Suggestion of sorcerers room - candle and skylight for source of light" at the bottom of the image, and a sketch of a faucet on the right edge. The image is signed in the bottom right corner of the picture by Joe Stahley (1894 - 1969), one of the skilled background artists who participated in this momentous film's production. The drawing presents pinholes in the corners, staple holes on the left edge, minor age-related toning, and faint graphite smudging. With minor handling and edge wear from production, the lot is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
