Fantasia Dew Drop Fairy Concept Drawing Signed By Samuel Armstrong (Walt Disney, 1940). Outstanding detailed pastel concept artwork on black paper of the Dew Drop/Sugar Plum Fairy. The "Nutcracker Suite" section opens with the "Dawn of the Sugar Plum Fairies." This section of Fantasia was directed by Samuel Armstrong (1893 - 1976). He was the main background artist in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and also did major work on Dumbo, Bambi, and Fantasia. In later years, he did a great deal of artwork for Disney's Little Golden Book Program. This stunning concept piece is in pastel on black paper of 10" x 8", signed and inscribed on the white mat "Happy Birthday Dear Sue!" This is a rare Samuel Armstrong signature; we have seen his initials on backgrounds before, but rarely a signature. Back of the frame has a pen and ink label that reads "'The Dewdrop Fairies' Opening Sequence of 'The Nutcracker Suite' Directed by Samuel Armstrong for Walt Disney's 'Fantasia'." Fairy is an amazing 4". Mat opening is 10" x 8". The detail on the fairy in this piece is striking.
