Description
Fantasia "Dance of the Hours" Hyacinth Hippo and Ben Ali Gator Courvoisier Story/Concept Art by Earl Hurd (Walt Disney, 1940). Ben Ali Gator preforms a grand show of strength and elegance as he lifts Hyacinth Hippo high in this outstanding piece of original story/concept art by pioneering animator Earl Hurd (1880 - 1940) for the comical "Dance of the Hours" segment of Disney's Fantasia. Though somewhat of a footnote in Disney's history, the studio would likely not have existed were it not for Hurd's advancements in the field of animation. In conjunction with J.R. Bray (founder of Bray Productions), Hurd co-developed the processes involved in cel animation with a patent granted in 1914! By the time Hurd joined Walt Disney, he was primarily working in as a storyboard artist. This story/concept art features Hurd's masterful detail, with the dancers rendered to full-figure in graphite sharing a combined 4.5" x 7" on the sheet of 12 field 5-peghole animation paper which has an outlined image area matching the mat aperture. The sheet bears a Walt Disney Productions copyright stamp near the lower edge and a WDP stamp near the lower right indicating it was originally offered for sale through the exclusive partnership between the Studio and Courvoisier Art Galleries; the original Courvoisier CoA is also included noting it as one of only 35 Story Sketch pieces from the scene made available to the public. On the reverse side of the artwork near the lower left corner can be found a faded studio stamp identifying the piece as Seq 10, Sketch No 432, Artist: Earl Hurd, with the stamped date Jul 11, 1939. It has been matted to an overall size of 19" x 14" with a mat aperture of 9.75" x 7.25". With typical handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning, pinholes, and remaining tape/staining near the edges/corners, overall show of strength by a historic hand in Very Good condition.Auction Info
