Description

Fantasia Centaurette Concept Drawing and Long Ride to Granada Memoir by James Bodrero (Walt Disney, 1940). By the hand of artist James Bodrero, presented is a magnificent original concept drawing of a centaurette, created during the development of the "Pastoral Symphony" segment of Walt Disney's 1940 masterpiece Fantasia. Seen on page 175 of Didier Ghez's They Drew as They Pleased: The Hidden Art of Disney's Late Golden Age, The 1940s - Part Two, this beautiful drawing is an especially rare find. It depicts a topless centaurette, created before the Hays office enforced the Motion Picture Production Code to insist that the studio discreetly hang garlands around their necks. Of the art of James Bodrero, Campbell Grant wrote "I have one of his spirited paintings of two polo players in violent action. I watched him do it and it was unbelievable. First a head and then a horse's hoof and then a polo mallet and finally it all tied together. I told him that anyone had to roughly sketch out such a picture and then fill in the details. Not so says he, I see the finished picture on the paper before I touch it with my brush." This marvelous piece is rendered masterfully in pastel and framed under glass with a mat window size of 7.5" x 11.25" and an overall frame size of 13.5" x 17.5". The frame is sold as-is. This lot includes the first printing of the 1965 memoir Long Ride to Granada, written and illustrated by James Bodrero. The drawing shows minor handling and slight toning from age, and the book shows handling wear and tear. The condition overall is Very Good.
