Eyvind Earle Sleeping Beauty Forest of Thorns Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1959). "A forest of thorns shall be his tomb, borne through the skies on a fog of doom! Now go with a curse and serve me well... Around Stefan's castle cast my spell." Maleficent deters Prince Phillip from reaching the Princess Aurora by surrounding the castle with a thick, nearly impassable forest of thorns. A foreboding monochromatic image, this original concept painting was rendered vividly in gouache by the hand of Disney Legend Inductee Eyvind Earle. Showcasing great atmospheric depth, Earle makes the castle seem desperately unreachable in an image made all the more ominous by its eerie purple hues. Anyone familiar with the climactic clash between Maleficent and Phillip will immediately recognize the color, frequently coupled in the film with Earle's sickly greens. Some animators complained that they thought his detailed designs clashed with the movement of the characters, to which Walt Disney responded, "for years and years, I have been hiring artists like Mary Blair to design the styling of a feature, and by the time the picture is finished, there is hardly a trace of the original styling left. This time Eyvind Earle is styling Sleeping Beauty and that's the way it's going to be!" Perhaps more so than any other Disney film, the incredible and distinct look of Sleeping Beauty can be attributed enormously to its masterful production designer. This piece is rendered on 15" x 6" illustration board and it bears the signature of the artist in the lower right corner. Minor handling and edge wear with pinholes in the corners. Condition is Very Good.
