DescriptionEyvind Earle Lady and the Tramp Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1955). The titular canine lovebirds Lady and Tramp encounter the Scottish Terrier Jock on their walk through the idyllic neighborhoods seen in the 1955 Disney animated classic Lady and the Tramp. The charming landscapes of the film were frequently based on the quaint locations of Walt Disney's childhood hometown of Marceline, Missouri, and featured here is a wonderful original concept painting of the town by the great Disney Legend Inductee Eyvind Earle (1916-2000). The pastel colors, architecture and flora seen here are maintained closely in the final film, making this a very exciting piece of conceptual design for Lady and the Tramp. On page 473 of Taschen's The Walt Disney Film Archives: 1921-1968, Andreas Platthaus writes, "In terms of dramaturgy, the contrast between [the] two sides of town is brilliantly implemented. Earle's graphic elegance was naturally in greater demand in designing the middle-class ambience in the sophisticated residential neighborhood." This incredible piece is also a rare find in that Eyvind Earle is known to have primarily worked on the "Bella Notte" sequence, and early concepts of the scene have Lady and Tramp coming back to the house as the sun comes up. An extremely rare image, and the first we've seen with Jock, this is an exciting alternate look into what could have been. Rendered expertly in gouache in illustration board, this large landscape-format piece measures 20" x 9". It bears the artist's signature in the lower right corner, and there is little handling and edge wear. There are pinholes in the corners, and the condition is Very Good.
