    Description

Eyvind Earle Grand Canyonscope Background/Color Key Concept Art(Walt Disney, 1954). "Welcome to the Grand Canyon, nature's masterpiece and wonder of the world. Spread out folks, this is in CinemaScope!" says Park Ranger J. Audubon Woodlore at the start of this cartoon starring Donald Duck. Directed by Charles Nichols, this short was only the second to be shot in CinemaScope. It was was the lead-in to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea which was the studio's first feature-length live-action film in CinemaScope. Backgrounds for this landmark short were designed by Fine Artist and Disney Legend inductee, Mr. Eyvind Earle and this concept painting is one of his. It is interesting how this early preliminary concept piece shows Donald Duck in his blue sailor suit rather than the purple tourist outfit that he sports in the final production. This scene of Donald approaching the Indians pueblo type homes can be seen at the 4:47 mark. Painted in gouache on 11.5" x 5.5" this original painting is hand-signed by the artist Eyvind Earle (1916 - 2000) in bottom right corner. The art is floated in a glass front frame measuring 23.5" x 16". Condition of the artwork is Very Good. Frame is sold as is.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
