Description
Eyvind Earle - Disneyland Sleeping Beauty Castle Large 19.5" x 14.25" Signed Concept Painting of Prince Phillip Original Art (Walt Disney, c. 1957). Princess Aurora's one true love is held captive by two of Maleficent's goons and will soon be chained and locked away until he grows old - while the Sleeping Beauty will stay young until awakened in this magnificent concept painting for Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle by Disney Legend Eyvind Earle (1916 - 2000). When Disneyland opened its doors in 1955, the second story of the Sleeping Beauty Castle was empty. Walt then had Imagineers working on a walkthrough attraction, taking Earle's evocative paintings as a reference for it. And what a painting it is, matted with an approximate opening size of 19.5" x 14.25". By the time Earle arrived at Disney Studios in 1951, he was already a well-established Fine Art painter with his works hanging in prestigious galleries and museums, but he was eager to prove himself in animation. Early on in his time at the studios, Earle found his inspiration. As he recalled in his book, Horizon Bound on a Bicycle: Autobiography of Eyvind Earle, "I remember the first day I came to work... up on the wall... were about 100 exquisite little paintings by Mary Blair... In my mind, I said to myself, 'That's the job I want at Disney'." After working under Blair on Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland Walt chose Eyvind Earle as color stylist on Sleeping Beauty. This masterpiece was created for that 1959 film, painted in gouache on board. The art is ornately framed with Plexiglas for an overall size of 31" x 26" x 1.75". All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition. The hand-signed art is in Very Good to Fine condition with minor handling wear.More information about Eyvind Earle.
