    Description
Eyvind Earl - Sleeping Beauty Prince Phillip and Samson Against Maleficent as a Dragon Gouache on 23.25" x 10" Board Oversized Color Key/Concept Signed Painting (Walt Disney, 1959). "Now shall you deal with me, O Prince, and all the powers of hell!" Riding on his faithful steed, Samson, and wielding the Sword of Truth, Principe Phillip charges toward Maleficent in her powerful Dragon form in this enormous color key/concept painting created by Disney Legend Eyvind Earle (1916 - 2000) to plan for the gripping culminating fight from Sleeping Beauty. After years of denied applications, Earle was hired as a background painter at Walt Disney Studio in 1951, participating in Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan. With Sleeping Beauty, Earle was given the important role of envisioning the film's artistic direction, as displayed in this captivating piece, done in gouache on a 23.25" x 10" board, signed by Earle in the bottom right corner. This color key/concept painting showcases Earle's distinctive minimalist approach, focusing on immediately recognizable shapes and silhouettes accentuated by his stirring color palettes and precise texturing, influential in creating the scene at the 1:09:23 mark of the film as the undaunted hero races to save Princess Aurora, despite Maleficent's threatening fire. Although it might just take a glance to recognize the narrative in this image, thanks to Earle's simplified style, its captivating nature invites us to wonder at the extraordinary depiction of this emblematic fight. The lot is offered on a 34.5" x 21" Plexiglas-fronted frame. Light handling and edge wear can be seen on the board, as well as pinholes on its corners. All frames are sold as-is. Photos are not representative of actual frame condition. In Very Good condition.Auction Info
