Carl Barks "Golden Fleece" Concept Sketch Art and Fine Art Serigraph #66/500 (Walt Disney, 1972-93). Uncle Scrooge #12 (Dell, 1955) featured the long-form story "The Golden Fleecing," about Scrooge's quest for a coat woven of pure gold. He is tricked into traveling to Mt. Colchis in search of the legendary Golden Fleece by a group of Larkies (aka Harpies, evil half-woman, half-bird creatures from the mythological tale of Jason and the Argonauts), who capture the expedition. The story was later adapted into a DuckTales animated episode, but first, it served as the inspiration for the only wide-view Disney Ducks painting by Carl Barks, CB-OIL 23 "Golden Fleece." This incredible image of Scrooge, reaching for the shimmering fleece as Donald Duck, Huey, Dewey, and Louie look on, was issued as a limited edition 96-color serigraph by Disney Art Editions in 1993. This lot includes print #66/500, with an image size of 24" x 12". What really makes this lot special is the original penciled thumbnail of the image, in graphite on paper with a blue pencil grid. This little 5.5" x 2.25" layout sketch was sent to the original person who commissioned the painting, and includes Barks' 1970s Goleta, California address, with the handwritten note, "If okay, let me know." Both the serigraph and the thumbnail are hand-signed by Carl Barks (1901-2000) and matted together for an overall size of 36" x 27". The original Disney Art Edition booklet that came with the serigraph is included; it too has been hand-signed by Carl Barks. Serigraph and sketch are in Fine condition. A real treasure!
