Description
Babes in Toyland RARE Layout and Concept Drawing Group of 4 by Ken O'Connor (Walt Disney, 1961). Featured in this lot is an incredibly rare group of layout and concept drawings for Babes in Toyland by Disney Legend Ken O'Connor (1908 - 1998)! Ken O'Connor studied at Melbourne Technical College and the Australian National Gallery and as well as California School of Art after he emigrated to the US. He joined Disney in 1935 where he worked as an art director or layout artist for 13 features and almost 100 shorts! He did special art styling for Babes in Toyland, which was released on 12/14/1961 but started development in 1955 as an animated feature. It didn't transition to a live-action production until after the film was delayed, though it followed the same premise of Mary Contrary and her future husband Tom Piper defeating the miser Barnaby (who wishes to marry Mary instead) with the help of Mr. Toymaker in Toyland. These are some of the only concepts we've seen from the film, rendered in pastel and watercolor. They showcase O'Connor's talent for creating the mood his work with dramatic lighting and contrast, as well as the detail and care he took when making his layouts. The artwork features Mary Contrary, Tom Piper, Barnaby, his henchmen, and some of the toy soldiers and were created for: Mary and Tom's journey through the Forest of No Return; Barnaby convincing the henchmen to work for him with his piggy bank full of money at about 11:50; and the toy soldiers marching off to battle. Two of the concepts are rendered on board and two on 16 field paper with image sizes ranging from 14'' x 8.5'' to 15.5'' x 12.5''.
