Description
Alice in Wonderland Pansies and UNUSED Orchid Character Concept/Layout Drawing Group of 5 by Ken O'Connor (Walt Disney, 1951). "And we sing too!" The adorable Pansies of Disney's 1951 classic Alice in Wonderland are presented alongside development art for an unused Orchid character in this phenomenal group of 5 original concept/layout drawings by the hand of longtime layout man and art director Ken O'Connor (1908 - 1998). The Pansies are very similar to their appearance at the 27:02 timestamp as all the flowers begin to reveal themselves to Alice, however some of their color schemes have been swapped or slightly modified and they have each been given a unique facial style. This piece has been hand-painted in gouache over graphite to an image area of 6.75" x 4.75" with layout blocking in red pencil and scene/film footage notes at the lower edge presented on a slightly trimmed sheet of 16 field 5-peghole animation paper. The remaining 4 concepts featuring the unused Orchid are presented on untrimmed 16 field 5-peghole sheets rendered in mixed media including graphite, colored pencil, and gouache to image areas ranging from 5.5" x 6.5" to a frame-filling 9" x 10.75" and exhibit fantastic detail characteristic of a live orchid. Given the elegance of orchids which is aptly embodied in these concepts, it is curious to wonder if they were the species initially considered for the solo role that was later assigned to the White Rose in "Golden Afternoon". With typical handling and edge wear including faint age-related toning, small areas of smudging, minor corner/edge creasing, pinholes, and the noted trimming, overall this veritable bouquet of concept/layout drawings is in Very Good condition.From the Ken O’Connor Archive.
